What is FutureDocs Abroad?

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for high school students to gain hands-on experience in real-life gross anatomy labs, operating rooms, and medical treatment rooms. Students will spend 10 days in the hospital, and at other medical facilities, experiencing the day-to-day lives of third and fourth-year medical students.

FutureDocs Abroad was created by The National Leadership Academies to give passionate high school students an opportunity right now to experience what, up till now, they’ve only seen on TV!

Will we be split into smaller groups during the experience?

Students will be split into smaller, more intimate groups for the program itself so they can participate in more activities, as well as experience a more hands-on approach.

Where will I stay during the program? And what should I pack?

Arrangements will be secured for students and chaperones to reside in a local hotel during the program. The hotel will be safe and comfortable with modern amenities including A/C. Student accommodations will be single-gender, double occupancy. A full suggested packing list will be provided to students after acceptance.

Strict curfews will be enforced on students throughout their stay, who again will be assigned a specific chaperone to report to. Students will be chaperoned at all times when outside the care of the staff at the medical center and hospital. Parents may contact chaperones directly if they cannot reach their child for any reason.

Note for our India program: In India, it is uncommon for hotel rooms to have two double beds. Therefore, each student will share a large queen bed. The hotel will provide extra linens and pillows so each student can sleep comfortably.

Will this program help me get into college and/or medical school?

FutureDocs Abroad is designed to give students hands-on experience and an opportunity to see, touch, and feel real medicine in a way they never imagined possible at this point in their lives.

The exposure and knowledge that students gain from FutureDocs Abroad is absolutely something that will strengthen an academic resume and provide an interesting and unique subject to focus on for applications and during admissions.

As you know, when applying to pre-med programs and medical school, you must have built a diverse and relevant resume that demonstrates, over time, your passion for, commitment to, and knowledge of the field.

How can I be assured of safety and security?

FutureDocs Abroad takes safety and security very seriously. The program staff is always available for our students. If any student has a problem or concern, we’re always there to help and support. Each student will have a dedicated chaperone throughout the program, as well as other staff members that will be available 24/7.

What does the tuition for FutureDocs Abroad include?

The tuition includes all program costs, international air travel, accommodations for the duration of the trip, 24/7 chaperones, three daily meals, your personalized FutureDocs Abroad Achievement and Leadership Certificate (mailed to you after the program), as well as any necessary local transportation and international health insurance provided by UnitedHealthCare. All international travel plans and accommodations will be arranged by the FutureDocs Abroad team, and are included in the tuition payment.

Tuition does not include recommended trip cancellation insurance, domestic airfare to the departure location for international travel (or other domestic transportation methods), required visas or passport fees, vaccinations, health records or tests, spending cash for souvenirs or snacks, or airline baggage fees.

What vaccinations or immunizations will my child need?

All students’ routine vaccinations must be up to date. A complete list of other recommended vaccinations will be provided well before departure and in time for proper administration prior to the program.

Does my child need a visa?

Yes – for some of our program locations. Citizens of the U.S. require a visa to travel to our programs in Vietnam and India. Full instructions on how to apply will be given to all enrollees. Any international student should contact the Admissions Team to discuss visa requirements.

Most importantly, students will need a passport with at least one blank visa page. All students should ensure that their passport is valid for at least 6 months after the end date of the program they are applying to.

Who will chaperone students during the program?

FutureDocs Abroad takes safety and security very seriously. Students will be chaperoned by a team of staff experienced in managing student programs. Chaperones accompany students on the international flight, stay in the same overnight accommodations, and accompany them on cultural excursions off-campus in order to be available 24/7 to students.

What about international safety?

As with travel to any international destination, general awareness, staying within the group as required by program policies, and our experienced team of staff will greatly reduce the likelihood of any safety concerns. All students will be trained on safety and security measures as well as plans of response should a safety concern arise, either locally or elsewhere within the country.

Why choose India as a location for FutureDocs Abroad?

FutureDocs Abroad has long-standing relationships with medical organizations and leaders in the education and healthcare fields in India, which allows students this superb access and experience. Vadodara is the third largest city in the Western Indian state of Gujarat. It is home to the largest university in Gujarat and is an important industrial, cultural, and educational hub of western India. It is a safe, and welcoming city. India is a vibrant country of assorted cultures and traditions, salient festivals, vivacious cities, and splendid architecture. It’s also renowned for the people’s warmth and hospitality.

FutureDocs Abroad also has ties to some of India’s most prestigious medical schools, the hospitals attached to them, other private hospitals, smaller community hospitals and clinics, and other health and government institutions. This allows an elite level of access and cooperation for attending students.

While physician mentors at the hospital will educate students in English, hospital patients and most of the general population does not speak English, so students will have the opportunity to truly immerse themselves in life in India.

All FutureDocs Abroad activities will take place at the Muni Seva Ashram and its affiliated hospitals and facilities.

Participants will receive their very own personalized FutureDocs Abroad Achievement and Leadership Certificate upon completion of the program.
